It's summer and it's time to go outside and play!  On the preschool playground, flowers are growing, the sun is shining, and it's a great time for learning.  Here at The Adventurous Child, where we design children's outdoor play areas and sell outdoor learning equipment and outdoor playground equipment for preschools, we are always thinking about how important it is for children to have time for outdoor play.  Outdoor play in natural playscapes provide young children with important opportunities to learn new things, reinforce previous learning, experience nature, exercise their bodies, and be creative.

Group size and type of group is also a very important factor in a learning process of a child. As far as group size and structure is concerned its teachers ability and competency that how she divides children equally according to the level of the task and their mental ability in this way students support, each other listens to each other and even corporate in finding the solutions of different problem which are given to them for discussion and for writing.  According to Kyriacou (1991), "the setting up of group work activities involves a number of decisions about the logistics of their organization.  First the size of the group and how groups are to formed, second the nature of the task third the aspect of group work concerns the teacher monitoring, forth the clear time management and the group work activities". The role of the teacher in this case is, one of directing the students, facilitating and monitoring their learning process.   It is commonly seen that the students in a class have different attitudes and strengths.  Therefore, the teacher is a person, who shows acceptance of children, praises each child's strengths and recognizes each child's uniqueness by planning purposeful task having clarity of goals and way it is presented to groom their abilities.  In this regard, Cordon (2000) has outlined the duties of the teacher during group task.  He states, that during the tasks the teacher should introduce the activity and establish a collaborative working climate; by clarifying expected outcomes.  The teacher should be ensured that children had a clear understanding of the ground rule for the group work, respective rules and interdependency.

Hence, it proves that although group-work is a student-centered approach but the teacher still has to play a lead role in that, the teacher's role acts as a beacon for his/her pupils.  She has, in fact the central role in the whole process of group work.  It is her responsibility to plan activities in such a way that children could work effectively in groups under the guidance of their teacher.  Cordon (2000) cities Lyle (1993) who points to the importance of teachers encouraging children to see themselves as responsible learners by designing the activities, which ensure children pose questions, make observations and contribute opinions. After knowing the importance of group work, I analyzed my role as a primary teacher to implement effective group work in my class.  I have always felt that very young students attain better outcome if we give them opportunity to interact with their peers in their classroom and to discuss the task. Hence, according to the purpose and objectives of the lesson I have tried to make use of group work in my classroom in order to develop the students' communicative and explorative skills.    In the feedback session that followed, I emphasized to see the variety and depth of ideas.  The group came up with such brilliant points, which were because of the exchange of different ideas with each other.   Therefore, I observed, the outcomes of segregating my students in different small study-groups were more result-oriented and the students did their assigned tasks vigorously and in a better way.

Students of kindergarten were somewhat accustomed to group work strategy since they had been introduced to group work in the previous class.  Therefore, I did not face much problem in the organization of group work activities.  Initially, I made use of friendship grouping because student felt more secure working with their friends (according to Galton and Williamson (1992) many primary teachers regularly group by friendship, because these groups are more than the seating arrangements.  It also fosters collaboration and cooperative learning setup).   Once they started enjoying working in groups, then gradually, I started sorting them into mix ability groups with usually high to low or middle ability and high or middle to low ability members.  This has worked quiet well since the clever student tends to pull the slow learners along with them as well and therefore providing all students an equal opportunity to extend their ideas.

Therefore, teachers who are still following the conventional methods of teaching should make a habit of creating small study-groups in the primary classes, which is quite evident in light of different researches in the following ways:

    They should plan a task for each group which should be challenging, time-bound and most importantly should have a relevance to the level of the students
    Make sure that the group face across at each other and that they can all hear each other
    For newly formed groups, in order to break the ice among them, we can assign them different roles to play so that they should start interacting with each other quickly
    They should be ready to accept the challenge of the group-refuses, and should proactively plan to cope with such situations
    They should create the groups keeping in mind these things comparable ability, mixed ability, friendship, gender etc.

My Journey in Mris

        Starting from Kashmir as my father got posted in New Delhi it was a new journey to a new school.               Principal Mam, Mrs.Dhriti Malhotra always is on round in each and every class to look after each and every student and to maintain discipline in the campus. In an Assembly Principal Mam also urged the children to come to school on Holiday Morning to do sports activities which resulted greatly?

  Manav Rachna also took children to Landmark the book shop in Great India Mall in Gurgaon from which students took many interesting and knowledgeable books.

     On debating the topic of India hosting Commonwealth games 2010 Manav Rachna brought students from 12 schools in Gurgaon resulting in which Ashwin Srivastava (my friend) of 9th standard Manav Rachna got 1st prize as he stood before everyone saying India is the Best and we must be always positive in thinking.

          It has been rightly said by Mahatma Gandhi that if you have decided to fulfill your dream and you are working honestly and hardly on that dream you can do it but if you are thinking of a dream, but you are not confident on that you cannot do it.

          On Fridays Manav Rachna has school extended time programme from 2pm to 3pm in which students perform their activities in sports, computers, robotics etc.

DEALING WITH SLOW LEARNERS

A very big problem that every school faces, i.e. the difficulty to deal with the slow learners. The teachers have their big headache over these children. Handle them in homework & class work, understanding the topic, etc are the areas concerned with the slow learners. We try to advise them or we try to get result by hook or crook through putting negative enforcement by punishing them. It is estimated that due to that problem many slow learners or dropout students are being termed as weak students & thrown out of the school. But that is not the solution. The result of the action of the throwing out the child out of the school paves the way to create a dark spot in the life of the victim child. Then, where are the solutions? If the teachers will give time to think over those children, definitely the solution comes in their hand. It is also the proof in history that many slow learners have become qualified themselves as the scientists & writers in their life. So, why not we experiment with these slow learners who are with us? Have we thought over it? Have we tried to understand the life of a slow learner? The following discussion may help the teachers to improve the skill of the slow learners.

 

•1.     Psychological Analysis & Problem solution-

The more & more we think about the child the more we get the solution. Firstly,we have to search the problem area of the child. The problem of the child may be his family or friends or his personal condition. If we go for personal asking questions as a relative of his own, then we can be assured about getting some difficulties for which the child is not reading. Then we, from our level will try to get solution of this problem.

•2.     Guidance from his level-

Child has a level of his own. Level of understanding is different from one child to another. The weak child more often can't understand the studies because he has not understood the previous formula/concept in the previous classes. How can he understand the concept of class IX if he has not understood the simple concept of class VII & VIII? That's why the child should be personally taught from his understanding level.

 

•3.     Encouragement in small success-

The greatest factor for the success of the life of the child is his encouragement. If we try to find out the strengths of the weak child then we come across some of them. If we try to applaud him with encouraging words & give confidence he definitely feels his importance & worth. Once the child has grown his confidence means he will definitely improve. The most important cause of his weakness is we; the teachers always give importance to the good children & neglect the weaker in the class. Encouragement can change the whole personality of a child.

 

•4.     Fixing the goal & Prescribing a Time table-

The child should be persuaded to make a time table for the study purpose. Sometimes some children have no goal regarding study. The teacher should observe those children & inspire them to fix the goal for the life & help him to make a time table for every day work so that the child will be captured through the time  table to do the things at write time.

•5.     Giving Memory tips-

More often the child forgets what ever he learns. That's why he loses his confidence on him & differentiates between him & the good students. The teacher's role is to give the tips such as ‘how to recall', ‘in which way to write systematically', ‘when to learn', ‘how to learn' etc.

 

•6.     Giving importance in the class-

It's always seen that the class room teaching goes on with the direction & understanding of the strong children. But if the average children do not understand your teaching & you are just running towards the completion of syllabus then the whole teaching is a futile one. Some times it's very urgent to go near the weak child & ask personally whether he has understood or not. Here the teacher's asking approach should be very polite & sweet, not rude.

 

•7.     Self reading method-

Most of the weak children are found that they neglect self reading. They may have the language understanding problem for which they do not take interest to read. If the teacher freely tells the child to come at home or to him in extra time for understanding the key words then little little the child will take interest to self reading. Then definitely he improves himself slowly.



•8.     Questions for practice-

Some questions can be given time to time to engage the learner in the habit of study. That is a practice which can enable the student to come across the learning point at a regular basis.

•9.     Special guidance beyond school hour-

Basically we the teachers now have become very professional. After school hour we hesitate to give even a single minute to the children which reduce our rapport. The weak children, they need special attention beyond school hour that is personally to take up the child's difficulty. We the teachers, beyond school hour, either we waste time in gossiping or earn money in tuition. If we give 1hour extra time for the weak children then definitely they will improve. Because it is very difficult to give time to the weak ones in the classroom itself.

 

•10.              Seating arrangement-

More often we see that the strong children in the class room don't wish to sit with the weak children. The weak ones always sit with the weak. This is another cause for the no improvement of the weak children. If the class teacher prepares seating arrangements properly to benefit the weak children-to make arrangement to sit the strong one with the weak one & instruct to the strong one to help the weak one in studies then the weak ones may be improved in studies.

 

•11.              Search physical or mental problem-

The teacher should find out any physical or mental problem of the child. A child is not writing anything from the black board means may be some eye defect. A child is not obeying the words of the teacher, may be some mental problem is there. Some children are severely affected by the physical problems which made them lazy to read & write. Firstly the teacher/parent should find out the problems then treat them accordingly.

 

•12.              Creating confidence level in his interest areas-

The teacher should observe the child & secretly know the interest areas of the child. Even if the child plays, act, does some work the teacher/parent should find out his interest/specialty. Because, every child is special. The encouragement can be started from the child's interest areas. When the child builds his confidence in his interest area then we can expand & inspire the same confidence in other areas also.

 

•13.              BE A FRIEND TO HIM-

Be a friend to the weak child. Teacher should try to knowingly mix with the child more & more with him. Unknowingly when the friendship is build with that child then the child starts loving the teacher. The starting of love starts the surrender of the child towards the same teacher. Then the teacher, whatever he tells the child obeys it. The mystery of all success is the love, understanding & friendship.

 

Oh teacher! Many more children are waiting to catch your lovable hand. They are searching you as a friend. They are so called by the society as slow learners or weak ones but actually they are not. May be some unfortunate moment misguided them. Is it not noble to improve them, support them to develop in their own pace? Is it not wise to take care of them? The history has proved the slow learners such as Thomas Edison & Gandhi as the world class Scientist & Leader respectively.

                   Every child is special. As every child has a soul, there is every possibility of improvement, sooner or later. The goal of the soul is to develop. The source of energy is lying within them but the only thing is to stretch the hand of confidence towards them which will solve their problem & improve their quality.

Your Baby Can Read Reviews: Is It Effective?

I had looked at a lot of reading programs before I came across another Your Baby Can Read review and after using the product for about a year now I thought I would write my own personal experiences with it.

My wife and I have 3 children and we really emphasize the importance of a good education.  That's why when the kids were still very young we began to work with them so they would be very well prepared for school when it came time.  A lot of people do not realize that the early years of a baby are so impressionable and that the mind can soak up all kinds of information if we just chanel that energy in the right direction.

We already knew we wanted to teach out kids to read when they were young, but we needed a program that would be best suited for out situation.  My wife is astay-at-home-mom so she would have plenty of time to work with the 3 kidos.  After seeing a TV commerical for Hooked on Phonics we gave it a try.  It was a lot of fun for us, but the kids got really bored because those sounds didn't mean anything.  They could say "d-d dog" all they wanted, but it seemed to confuse them a little.  I know some schools use this approach in kindergarden and 1st grade, but even when children are 2 and 3 you can teach them in much more effective ways.

Then we came across Your Baby Can Read and really knew it was different.  The promises they made seemed totally off the wall though.  Teach your kid to read when they are still 5 months old?  That's just crazy.  What I did not realize is that although they can't read a Charles Dickens novel at that age, they COULD learn the concepts of reading and learn to recognize words and what they mean as well.

Childhood is most formative stage of anyone's life. this stage of life is very far from the consequences of this world. Most enjoyable part of life. But the effect of this stage remains whole lifei.e. till anyone dies. Whatever we grasp or accept at this stage remains for whole life. And then no power can change that only it can be bend according to situations.

Child is very innocent and as I mentioned, very far away from the remaining world. But still child needs care because he is not so independent he totally relies on nearones of his i.e. parents. A soft hug gives the feeling of security which makes the child confident. And this soft hug gives him strength to survive in this world. Have you ever thoyght-Why child doesn't go in everyone's lap? Because different people have different approaches towards them. The one who use something different from others the child loves to be with thatone.. Love is not only the need of child but it is of everyone. Nowadays the whole world is striving for love. And child understands the language of love only.If you will become dear to the child & make him also your dearones then the whole problem will get solved.

APPROACH TOWARDS CHILDHOOD EDUCATION.

Education starts in the womb only. The child learns so many things inside the womb only. As we all know ABHIMANYU had also learnt the 'CHAKRAVYUH BHEDAN' inside his mother's womb only. At the age of 3 when child enters the school the teacher is solely responsible for his education.

Parents are the first priority for the child because at this age he only knows his parents well. He knows his parents are the only one's those who loves him. So it becomes difficult for most of the child to adjust in school environment.

 Teacher should not directly start teaching to on very frst day of school. The first priority of the teacher should be to make child comfortable in the school. This can only be done when the teacher is serving from heart. Teacher has to go back to  her childhood stage. This will help teacher in understanding the child. This can be done by interacting more and more with the student. And the interaction must be interesting for him. Teacher has to speak in their tone only. Teacher must try every possible way that creates liking for her among students.Once this is achieved the whole education will become simple.

Sometimes teacher should also play with the students and must behave like them only. These all things will create interest among the students for learning and school also.

When we teach some topics in class then we should relate that to daily life. And you will see that atleast 5-6 students will be having some story related to that topics. Teacher must listen all that experiences of them that inculcates confidence among them. And they become extrovert also. Students must not have fear of teacher because then they hesitate to share their problems. They should treat you as one of them only.

And once the teacher is able to make their position in students heart then everything goes very smoothly. Students will wait for your period.

Being a pre-primary teacher I have gone through all these experiences. And I practiced these in my classes. And now I found the students love me immensely. They listen more to me than their parents. They want me to be a part of their birthday parties. And it is extremely a soothing feeling of my life. I enjoy their company & they mine. And we do studies simultaneously.

Book Review - 55 Stories 4 Kids (Arabic)

Book Review

    Prof. Yahya tops his books with this one which reflects some of his knowledge about best stories to make children learn and think to build certain ethics. Culturally the book presents various faraway lands stories, in simple Arabic language, to be used by parents and grandparents to narrate before sleeping, or any time of the day. A good gift for familial occasions. Families with kids from 3 to 12 years of age.  

The author starts the 55 stories with an introduction followed by The crow and the Duck, the Frog and Ox, the hare and the Tortoise tales and ends with The Hunter and his Dog, and  The Fox and the Grapes tales.

 With this book, Yahya makes an important contribution to the development of a planetary consciousness so needed in these full of stress times searching for kids stories. Our children need literature to make their imagination travels easily and smoothly in the dream lives of the actors of the stories. The stories are fables collected and written in simple Arabic language to be read by parents and grandparents to their love ones. May be the most story telling appealing for kids. Professor Yahya in this book, is very influential in his style of narration.

In his introduction Prof. Yahya described his purpose of writing the stories. He writes: “I have decided to do something in my old age, I tried to write the fable tales for my grandchildren to tell them before or after sleep. I collected anecdotes, first from what my grandma was telling me  about in my childhood, even though she was illiterate, like my grandpa, who used to tell us stories when he was in the army, at the beginning of the twentieth century. Their tales still wandering in my imaginative side of my brain. Other tales I remember from my school curriculum, in my second to fifth grade. I also included tales from far away lands, like China, Persia, Rome,  Africa, and my-now-country, the United States. The literature is almost full of great writers, politicians, and teachers, who give examples when they talk or wrote, or describe, or explain. It is a wise method to use, to make people wonder, and begin to apply some ideas or thoughts to those who cannot-for any reason, mentally, or physically-understand. It  is the wisdom, old and new, in these fable tales, and anecdotes, which force me to write this number of fables and tales. I believe, literate, illiterate, or even highly educated anywhere on earth are in serious need to learn in order to live in peace.”

Exams - Dealing With the Stress

Exam Stress

Dealing with the stress of exams can be, and most likely will be, a nightmare. The best thing you can do though is to take any advice you get, and follow it!
Below is a selection of tips, some I gathered from other sources, but for the most part, they come from my own personal experiences.

You have to believe in yourself!
You need to believe you can do it, and keep your morale and self-respect levels high-up. This might not suit you, but I started working out during my exams, lasted a month afterward and stopped, but it helped me to relieve my stress without taking it all out on my family.

Revise with a friend!
You need time to yourself to revise, however, it is good for you to get out revise with your friends and then go see a film or something. Whatever makes your clock tick.

Don’t over/under estimate yourself!
Don’t believe you can’t do it, but be realistic. Don’t get worried about failing, but don’t get too hyped up on getting straight A’s either!

Don’t make the mistake of caffeine!
Sure, coffee makes you stay awake, but it doesn’t give you energy and you’ll soon lose your concentration, determination and probably waste a nights worth of revision.

Try to avoid panic!
Everybody panics during exam times, try your absolute best not to. Just play some of your favourite music, and relax. Also, breathing deeply is useful.

Every exam is a new one!
In my standard grades I sat and did nothing during the second maths paper, simply because I felt I’d messes up paper 1. Turns out I could’ve got most of it!

At the end of the day, they’re your exams. If you feel you’ve done your best and tried your hardest, who is anybody to say you failed? You have to fail sometimes or you won’t appreciate the times you succeed, which I assure you will come later as long as you try hard.

Stupid is, as stupid does for LAUSD administration

Once the shining beacon of public education – Southern California educators have recently exposed their abandonment of scholastic achievement in favor their crazy pathological ideology – and they are bragging about it! What are they smoking in the board meetings?

Perhaps you missed it. It made the news for a couple of days and was subsequently shoved quietly under the rug of media collusion. After all, the rationalization for it is hardly defensible. Californians possessed with a modicum of common sense could hardly stomach the hubris with which the educational establishment blithely defended one more snowflake in the avalanche of stupidity responsible for the continued decline of a school system that only forty-five years ago was the best in the world. Without the alternate media of the internet this story would have disappeared unobtrusively. God bless the bloggers who shined a light on it before the dinosaur media could obfuscate and hide another horrendous fiscal malfeasance.

Of course I mean the recent announcement of the Los Angeles County School District to spend 120 million dollars to install solar panels on district schools. They bragged that they were setting an "example for other school districts to follow". These academic bozos spoke glowingly of the LAUSD leading public school systems across the country as a model of "green" operational enlightenment. Wow, sounds pretty impressive, doesn't it? They are going to show the whole nation how to capture clean energy from the sun and reduce the school systems energy costs. For a mere 120 million dollars they bragged they could save the school district a whopping 5 million dollars per year! Did you catch that? LAUSD braniacs figured how to save 5 million taxpayer dollars in the worst recession since the great depression by spending 120 million dollars. With that kind of "savings" it will take twenty-four years to recoup their investment and break even! What a deal. No wonder student math scores are in such a rapid decline. Doesn't anybody in the Los Angeles schools have a calculator? Didn't anyone bother to divide 5 million into 120 million before they scheduled their embarrassing press conferences?

Apparently not. According to David Crippins, chairman of the district's school construction bond oversight committee, "We are fighting for our economic lives," calling the plan, "absolutely essential, because we must become energy independent and, especially here in California, we must create our own jobs." This from the chairman of the bond oversight committee. In the midst of massive teacher layoffs and pay-cutting the feckless leader of fiscal responsibility for district cites "fighting for our economic lives" as justification for recklessly spending an obscene amount of tax dollars on a scheme that makes no sense economically. I don't know what the functional life of  a solar panels is, but I would be surprised if it exceeds twenty years. And if not, this hair-brained project may never recoup its cost. But of course, that doesn't really matter. The taxpayers will foot the bill. Educational administrators look at the American worker as an endless well of revenue. It doesn't have to make economic sense. The important thing is their commitment to ideology. "Green" technology is one of their many socio-economic causes du jour – logic and common sense be damned. What they want is an opportunity to stand in front of the cameras and thump their chests and crow about how enlightened they are – I mean, how cool – they're going  "green"!

This is just one more example of the extremist ideology trumping common sense in our public school systems. It is difficult to understand how the educational establishment can be so oblivious to the effects of their fanatical commitment to their political dogma. It is a sad fact that the longer American students are exposed to our public school systems the farther behind they fall scholastically compared to students from other countries. And yet, I recently heard an "educator" taking calls from angry parents on a radio show defending the system and talking down to the callers repeatedly citing his "forty-five years of experience" as grounds for his superior expertise. Listening to this ignoramus all I could think about was how humiliated he should have been to admit that he had even been any part of such a dis-functional and inefficient system. He should of been ashamed to admit it, instead of holding it up as some sort of credential justifying his professional qualifications. Yet there he was, petulantly telling the parents he knew better than they did. It was like the helmsman at the wheel of the Titanic when it hit the iceberg citing that experience as the reason he should be teaching aspiring ship pilots.

The apex of American student SAT scores was 1964 – Got that? For forty-six years the "progressive" educational curriculum of our public schools has slowly eroded the scholastic competence of our students. Dropout rates are increasing. School violence has proliferated to the point we need armed officers on campus. Many High School graduates cannot even read their diplomas or place Mexico against a map of the United States, but our educational establishment is hell bent on continuing its headlong nosedive into academic decline in pursuit of their misguided ideology. As evidenced by the hapless self-righteous indignation of the bonehead on the radio and the illogical rationalization of the "bond oversight" committee chairman, there is little hope the educational establishment will wake up and chart a different course on its own. These career parasites need to be removed and replaced with new leaders with fresh innovative ideas. To accomplish real, positive change our public schools need revitalization from imaginative leadership committed to effective education rather than ideologues zealots bent on promulgating their political philosophy. Only the people have the power to accomplish this and it will have to be done at the polls.

Next election don't just vote out the career politicians, vote out the academic dinosaurs on the public school boards. Get rid of the arrogant school leadership – like the High School Principal that recently sent a memo to a parent telling her "To eat shit and die" for daring to think she should have some influence in what the school taught her children. Replace them with anybody untainted by the current system. Or would you rather subject you children to educators that can't work a calculator, but know in their hearts that political ideology is more important than math, economics or common sense?

I think it was Fritz Pearls that said insanity is repeating the same behavior over and over while expecting a different outcome – What does it make you if you keep repeating the same behavior over and over while the results just keep getting worse – public school establishment administrators?
